Tracking your progress toward the completion of seven teaching-development workshops in a variety of competency areas, two submissions of a philosophy of teaching statement and the completion of a peer review of teaching — the required components of Tier One of the Academy of Teaching Scholars — just got significantly easier.
What is the Academy of Teaching Scholars (ATS)?
ATS is a self-paced program designed and executed by Indiana University School of Medicine Faculty Affairs and Professional Development (FAPD) to help faculty build and share their skills as educators. The program has three consecutive tiers, and faculty can decide whether to pursue one, two or all three.
Those who complete Tier One (for which the portal is designed) will receive a certificate of completion, a letter of support signed by the dean and a book they choose from a list of educational favorites.
Participants can take up to three years to complete Tier One.
What’s new?
FAPD recognizes that manually tracking individual Tier One progress over a three-year period can be challenging. It has developed a convenient, online portal to make this task significantly easier for participants. The portal launches today.
What is the ATS Scholars Portal?
The portal is a website where participants can log in and quickly take note of their progress, identify and register for workshops they still need to complete, and upload required documents.
What are the key features of the ATS Scholars Portal?
The ATS Scholars Portal simplifies and streamlines the process of navigating the ATS program. A significant feature is the portal’s automatic documentation of participants’ registration and attendance at FAPD events that count toward ATS requirements, eliminating the need for participants to manually track their progress.
In addition, participants can:
- Learn about requirements and get tips for creating a philosophy of teaching statement
- Upload their philosophy of teaching statements — both their initial drafts (at the beginning of their Academy memberships) and their refined statements (after completing the rest of Tier One)
- Report the completion of a peer review of teaching
- See which competency requirements have been fulfilled by the ATS workshops they have already attended
- Find and register for workshops that fulfill competency areas that have not been completed
I am in the middle of participating in Tier One. Will my current progress be documented?
Yes! The portal has been pre-populated with workshop attendance data over the past three years. You might need to upload your (pre-)philosophy of teaching statement and acknowledge the completion of a peer review, if you have completed those tasks prior to the launch of the portal.
Note: If you notice that anything is missing in your dashboard, please let us know.
Where can I find the portal?
Bookmark the login page or visit the ATS page on the FAPD website to find a button to login.
How can I join the Academy?
First, learn more about ATS. Then, send an email notifying FAPD of your interest in joining. You will be added to the portal upon successful registration for the Academy.
Where can I ask questions?
If you have questions about the Academy of Teaching Scholars — or if you access the portal and discover any errors — contact FAPD at fapd@iu.edu.
