Genetics Education and Training for Advanced Practice Providers

Rapid advances in genomics have accelerated the necessity for specialty genetics care while simultaneously widening the gap between the need for and availability of geneticists and genetic counselors to meet the growing demand. As part of the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Precision Health Initiative, leaders at IU School of Medicine recognized the quandary and engaged an interprofessional team to develop an innovative strategy to address the provider shortage as well as genomics health equity. Implemented in 2023, the comprehensive 12-month IU School of Medicine Genetics NP/PA Education and Training Program, composed of didactic and clinical components, continues to exceed expectations! All APPs who have successfully completed the Genetics NP/PA Education and Training Program now serve as full-time providers on the interprofessional IU Health genetics team.
